Beggars Banquet

As in many carnivals around the world, Carnival in Aalborg loves to turn the world upside down for a while, loves to question well-established practices and play with alternative thoughts.

During the Beggars Banquet, the world was turned upside down when 25 vagabonds were invited to join the King of Carnival in a sumptuous feast. For one day, the vagabonds were treated as earls and lords challeging the existing world order. But the purpose of this tradition is and was not only to challenge norms. The tradition relates to the part of carnival tradition that is concerned with sympathy and tolerance.

For a number of years, Beggars Banquet, was a regular event at the Carnival in Aalborg. But in 2006, the organisation behind the Carnival in Aalborg chose to do without the Beggars Banquet due to the complexity surrounding the event - the Beggars Banquet became to difficult to hold within a framework in which human dignity and entertainment were equal parts.
