Yaa Asantewaa

Yaa Asantewaa is one af the leading Caribean carnival bands in Notting Hill Carnival in London, where they have an annual programme in Carnival Arts. In 2000, they placed second, one point behind the winners from Mahogany, who have also visited Aalborg.

Yaa Asantewaa has always been in the top five winning bands. Yaa Asantewaa took the 5th prize in Aalborg 2001, 2002 the won the 2nd price and finally in 2003 they won the 1st price. That is why we were happy that they accepted our invitation to participate in the Aalborg Carnival 2004. That year, Yaa Asantewaa was not able to bring along many huge costumes as they had done in the previous tree years. In stead they focussed on dramatisation and presentation in 2005.

In 2006 Yaa Asantewaa presented "A Story Yaa Knoww", which is the beginning of the trilogi to culminate in 2007 with the celebrations of the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade by the British Parliament. "A Story Yaa Knows - Chapter 1, 1st era 1400-1799" depicts the blak presence in London before and during Slavery. The theme concentrates on the impact of the slave trade. The imaery and artistry of the costumes depicts the stages of black progression into British society as noble pets, Sanchonettes etc. The bright and bold pattern tell a story of the richness of the culture that they were once born into and the struggle to hold on to their heritage.
