| The members of this
masked group are dressed in furs and the women are dressed in traditional
Bulgarian costumes. All the members wear bells of various sizes and make a
deafening noise when moving about. The mysterious masks are made of natural
materials, wood and textiles.
The group has existed since 1964 and is rooted in Bulgarian tradition. The masked people are called Survakari and their masks stem from ancient rituals in Bulgaria. The mask ritual symbolizes fertility and the good life. |
