Battle of Carnival Bands 2007

International Carnival Show
Friday, 25th of May 2007, 6pm - 10pm

To enhance the diversity of the many different carnival traditions, Carnival in Aalborg has chosen to invite carnival groups from all over the world to participate in the Battle of Carnival Bands.

The groups form a parade through the centre of Aalborg whereas their performances are judged individually by four independent parade judges. The parade proceeds to the city park, Kildeparken, where each group is given 8-10 minutes to perform their show on stage in front of the audience and  four show judges. The grand finale show, containing the top 5 groups from Friday's contest, takes place in Kildeparken, on Saturday, after the Grand Parade.

After the first half of the carnival groups have performed on stage in Kildeparken, the city key will be presented to this year’s Carnival Queen, Jytte Abildstrøm. Flanked by Aalborg Cannon Association, Bramwell Flyckt, the founder of Carnival in Aalborg, will give a tribute oration to the Carnival Queen. Afterwards, Aalborg’s second vice-mayor, Niels Bell, will present the queen with the city key. Aalborg Cannon Association ends the ceremony with the firing of a salute.

The parade starts at 6pm from C.W. Obels Plads in the centre of Aalborg and proceeds to the city park, Kildeparken. The show in Kildeparken starts at about 7pm and continues until 10pm.

Battle of Carnival Bands 2007

African Footprint International feat. Mahogany

African Footprint International is a dance project from Ghana. Through a longer period of time, the group has been working to improve deaf people’s situation through dancing. The group numbers both deaf and hearing members – and common to them all are that they master sign language. Under the theme “Africa”, the group gives an artistic dance show backed up primarily by different kinds of percussions.

Ethnick 97

Parisian samba group rooted in the French - West-Indian Islands. Inspired by their source, the group does not work with traditional samba traditions, but seeks inspiration in the samba traditions from the French - West-Indian Islands. The group backs up their dance show with different kinds of percussions.

Poco Loco

Danish samba school from Aalborg. The group seeks its inspiration in Brazil, which is also reflected in both the artistic and musical expression of the group. Also, the Brazilian element is visible in the group’s choice of colours, which are identical with the colours in the Brazilian flag.

Yaa Asantewa feat. Caribbean Scandinavian Association

A co-operation between the Danish group Caribbean Scandinavian Association and the British group Yaa Asantewa. The two groups tell the story of the Caribbean slaves. The show offers amazing costumes.

Maracatu NSE

German Brazilian-inspired carnival group. The group wears splendid baroque costumes inspired by the dress codes of the then European upper class. The show is accompanied by Afro-Brazilian rhythms.

Vimoroz

Danish West African-inspired drum and dance group. The group has found its source of inspiration in a number of close relations between members of Vimoroz and musicians from Ghana. Vimoroz won the Battle of Carnival Bands 2006.

Unidos de Amsterdam

Dutch carnival group inspired by the rhythms and ideas of the traditional Brazilian carnival in Rio de Janeiro. The group consists of a large number of samba dancers and a huge bateria. The get-ups that Unidos bring to Aalborg in 2007 cover a wide field; a big and colourful clown, birds from the Amazone, dancers dressed in black, wild African warriors, American Indians and traditional birds from the old Egypt. Also, as winners of the Battle of Carnival Bands in Aalborg twice before, Unidos will bring their winner masks and use them as part of their performance.

Segura!

Samba group from the Netherlands. The group’s get-ups, primarily made out of leather with lots of unique details, are both dramatic and expressive. The group is inspired by traditional Brazilian carnival traditions and backs up their dance show with different kinds of percussions.

Dunkelfolket

Danish theatrical company. According to the myth, Dunkelfolket originates from the beautiful scenery around Fosdalen in Northern Jutland where they emerge every spring as a sign of happiness, life and death. The group performs wearing their characteristic handmade wooden masks.

Dunkelfolket does not compete in the Battle of Carnival Bands contest in Kildeparken, but forms part of the Battle of Carnival Bands parade.
